Leadhills is the home for Britain's highest narrow gauge adhesion railway, reaching 1,498 feet above sea level. Operated and managed by a team of dedicated enthusiasts, all of whom are volunteers, the railway welcomes visitors every weekend during the summer months. We also run special events outwith these times and hope that families enjoy our Easter, Halloween, Santa and Steam Weekends. On Saturdays and Sundays, the trains run frequently, with journey time taking 25 minutes. The journey takes you from the station at Leadhills to the terminus at Glengonnar halt before returning back to the station. The train runs past the disused Glengonnar Mine, where minerals were first excavated in the 1450's. The narrow gauge track has been built on the original track bed of the Caledonian Railway and today runs a variety of historic industrial diesel locomotives. Visitors are invited to explore the signal box and railway shed, view the trains and wander around our small shop and museum.

The Leadhills and Wanlockhead Railway are pleased to announce that they will be running a ‘bus replacement’ service during the closure of the B797

During the closure of the B797 for resurfacing work, when the bus will be unable to get to Wanlockhead, the Leadhills and Wanlockhead railway will be putting on a Replacement Train service.
This will interchange with the bus service from Lanark during the week beginning 4th July.
We will be connecting the communities of Leadhills and Wanlockhead whilst the road is closed, to help people attend the Doctors surgery in Leadhills, or to go shopping in Lanark. Also some in Leadhills work in the Mining Museum in Wanlockhead so we will be offering a commuter service for these people.
This service will be unique in that it is usually the other way round, with bus replacements for trains. I have attached a timetable that connects with the bus at Leadhills that will be extending to the Station for the duration of the week.

Please see here for journey times.

We also have events throughout the year, which are listed on the website.
With the Steam Weekend on the 30th and 31st July being the next one, we will be visited by WOTO a Bagnall loco. Details on the website events page.

Note for Editors: -
The Leadhills and Wanlockhead Railway is Britain’s Highest Adhesion Railway and normally operates diesel hauled services between Leadhills and the County Boundary just outside Wanlockhead. Opening every weekend from April until end of September from 11.00am until 4.00pm. Operating since 1986 the railway carries over 3000 passengers per annum and is run entirely by volunteers.
